听力原文: Most American workers, especially those in professional occupations, follow a set procedure when they leave current employment. If you decide to quit, first, you should submit the letter of resignation to your supervisors at least 2 weeks before you plan to leave. When the letter of resignation is submitted, an exit interview with the immediate supervisor is scheduled. During an exit interview, the supervisor may ask questions like "What are your reasons for leaving?" "What can the company do to get you to stay?" and "What advice would you offer to the person who will replace you?" After that, you need to arrange to meet with the personnel manager to settle all personnel items, such as unpaid medical insurance claims and transfer of retirement funds.

Although employment termination practices vary somewhat from company to company, the 2-week notice is considered standard. If you are employed for certain posts, such as a teacher or school administrator, an even longer notice period, say a semester, may be required so that the school work may not be seriously affected.

If everything runs smoothly, you will be given a sum of money known as the severance pay. In the United States, employees usually receive severance pay when they are fired or asked to resign. The special pay is designed to provide financial assistance to the employee while he or she hunts for a new job.

(43)

A.You should be absent from work for 2 weeks before you hand in your resignation.

B.You should submit your resignation at least 2 weeks before you leave.

C.You should avoid having an exit interview with your immediate supervisor.

D.You should first settle all your personnel items with the personnel manager.

Passage Two

“One of the reasons I find this topic very interesting is because my mom was a smoker when I was younger,”says Lindson-Hawley, who studies tobacco and health at the University of Oxford.

By studying about 700 adult smokers, she found out that her mom quit the right way—by stopping abruptly and completely.

In her study, participants were randomly (随机地)assigned to two groups. One had to quit abruptly on a given day, going from about a pack a day to zero. The other cut down gradually over the course of two weeks. People in both groups used nicotine (尼古丁)patches before they quit, in addition to a second form. of nicotine replacement, like gum or spray. They also had talk therapy with a nurse before and after quit day.

Six months out, more people who had quit abruptly had stuck with it—more than one-fifth of them, compared to about one-seventh in the other group. Although these numbers appear low, it is much higher than if people try without support.

And the quit rates were particularly convincing given that before the study started, most of the people had said they&39;d rather cut down gradually before quitting.“If you&39;re training for a marathon, you wouldn’t expect to turn up and just be able to run it. And I think people see that for smoking as well. They think,‘ Well, if I gradually reduce, it&39;s like practice,&39;”says Lindson-Hawley. But that wasn&39;t the case. Instead of giving people practice, the gradual reduction likely gave them cravings (瘾)and withdrawal symptoms before they even reached quit day, which could be why fewer people in that group actually made it to that point. “Regardless of your stated preference, if you&39;re ready to quit, quitting abruptly is more effective,”says Dr. Gabriela Ferreira. “When you can quote a specific number like a fifth of the patients were able to quit, that&39;s compelling. It gives them the encouragement, I think, to really go for it,”Ferreira says.

People rarely manage to quit the first time they try. But at least, she says, they can maximize the odds of success.

What does Lindson-Hawley say about her mother?

A.She quit smoking with her daughter’s help

B.She succeeded in quitting smoking abruptly

C.She was also a researcher of tobacco and health

D.She studied the smoking patterns of adult smokers

How does Dr. Gabriela Ferreira view the result of Lindson-Hawley's experiment?A.It is idealized

B.It is unexpected

C.It is encouraging

D.It is misleading

What happens when people try to quit smoking gradually?A.They find it even more difficult

B.They are simply unable to make it

C.They show fewer withdrawal symptoms

D.They feel much less pain in the process

What kind of support did smokers receive to quit smoking in Lindson-Hawley’s study?A.They were given physical training

B.They were looked after by physicians

C.They were encouraged by psychologists

D.They were offered nicotine replacements

The idea of “a marathon”(Line 2, Para.5) illustrates the popular belief that quitting smokingA.is something few can accomplish

B.needs some practice first

C.requires a lot of patience

D.is a challenge at the beginning

Voice Your Opinion: Change is Needed in Youth Sports

Everywhere you look, you see kids bouncing a basketball or waving a tennis racquet (网球拍).And these kids are getting younger and younger In some countries, children can compete on basket-ball, baseball, and volleyball teams starting at age nine. _ (46) And swimming and gymnasticsclasses begin at age four, to prepare children for competition. It&39;s true that a few of these kids will de-velop into highly skilled athletes and may even become members of the national Olympic teams. _ (47) This emphasis on competition in sports is having serious negative effects.

Children who get involved in competitive sports at a young age often grow tired of their sport. Many parents pressure their kids to choose one sport and devote all their time to it. _ (48) But 66 percent of the young athletes wanted to play more than one sport for fun. Another problem is the pressure imposed by over-competitive parents and coaches. Children are not naturally competitive. In fact, a recent study by Paulo David found that most children don&39;t even understand the idea of compe-tition until they are seven years old. _ (49) The third, and biggest, problem for young athletes is the lack of time to do their homework, have fun, be with friends-in short, time to be kids. When they are forced to spend every afternoon at sports practice, they often start to hate their chosen sport. A researcher&39;s found that 70 percent of kids who take part in competitive sports before the age of twelve quit before they turn eighteen. _ (50) Excessive competitiveness took away all the en- joyment.

Need to remember the purpose of youth sports-to give kids a chance to have developing strong, healthy bodies.

听力原文:W: Robert, you play the guitar, don't you?

M: I used to. But I haven't played quite some time. I don't really have time these days with all my studies. Why do you ask?

W: I'm trying to organize a group to play at some parties on weekends. We still need a guitar player.

M: Well, I don't know. But your idea sounds fun to me.

W: Oh, it will be. I'm more or less in charge of things, so if you want to give it a try, you're in. It's as easy as that. Besides, it's a great chance to get out and meet people.

M: But I haven't practiced for a long time. I don't know if I remember any songs I used to play.

W: Don't worry about that. I just thought I'd ask you to try and join us sometime when we were practicing. We'll be practicing for a few months before we give performances.

M: OK, I'll have a try.

W: I'm sure you can do it. And it will be fun, too.

What do you think Robert is?

A.A dancer.

B.A singer.

C.A student.

Part B

Directions :

Read the short speeches on, the health effects of smoking given by five doctors. For questions 61 to

65, match the name of each doctor to one of the statements (A to G)given. below. Mark your answers

on, ANS WER SHEET1.

Panla:

There is no safe cigarette and no safe level of consumption. Some smokers think that switching

from stronger to milder cigarettes makes smoking safer, but this isn't true. For smokers usually

swallow the smoke deeper, or they often smoke the cigarettes to the shortest length. So, even if

you do make the switch but don't make these changes, the health benefits are very small when

compared to the benefits of quitting.

Jenny:

Anyone who smokes is at a risk of being harmed physically. As you continue to smoke, your

body learns to depend on cigarettes and you can smoke more and more. Just three cigarettes a day

can spark potentially fatal heart disease, and women are particularly at risk. It is never too early for

cigarettes to cause damage; it can start with the first cigarette.

Joanne:

There are many short-term health effects of smoking. A major consequence is decreased lung

function. This often leads to shortness of breath, constant cough and tiring easily during exercise.

Smoking also reduces the ability to smell and taste and causes early ageing of skin. Often people

don't realize that a smoking-related disease could be developing for years before it is detected. A

" smoker' s cough" or shortness of breath are early signs of problems which can be fatal.

Jocelyn :

For women, cigarette smoking increases the risk of a number of sex-specific health problems.

Smoking women can experience irregular periods. Smokers that are on the pill have a greater risk

of heart attack, stroke and other diseases. What' s more, stroke doesn' t only affect elderly people.

People in their 20s and 30s also die from strokes caused by smoking.

Amanda:

Many young women regard their smoking as short term, and don't believe they will develop

the long-term health effects of smoking. Often there' s a sense that you can just quit sometime in

the future. However, your current smoking is doing you damage, and it won't be easier to quit at

a later stage. The time to quit smoking is sooner rather than later. Smoking women in the family

way can have difficulties during childbirth.

Now match the name of each person,(61 t0 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note : there are two extra statements.

Statements

[A] Smoking affects all, though it is more damaging to women.

[B] Smoking is always damaging regardless of what cigarettes to be

[C] The longer you smoke, the more difficult you will give it up.

[D] Damage can be done as soon as you start smoking.

[E] Smoking will cause the early ageing of the women in the family way.

[F] People often overlook the early signs of the deadly problems resulting from smoking.

[G] Male smokers are more likely to develop smoking-related diseases than female smokers.
