In a conversation, eye-contact is important because more or less eye-contact can create communication barriers. In relationships, eye-contact serves to show intimacy, attention, and influence.

Eye-contact can mean different things in different cultures. In some Spanish-speaking countries, children show respect to an older person by not looking directly into the person's eyes during a conversation.
