听力原文: England was the first country to compete with Spain for claims in the New World, although it was too weak to do this openly at first. But Queen Elizabeth of England supported such explorations as early as the fifteen seventies.

Sir Humphrey Gilbert led the first English settlement efforts but failed. Gilbert's half brother Sir Walter Raleigh continued his work. Raleigh sent a number of ships to explore the east coast of North America. He called the land Virginia to honor England's unmarried Queen Elizabeth.

In 1585 .about one-hundred men settled on Roanoke Island, off the coast of the present day state of North Carolina. These. settlers returned to England a year later. Another group went there the next year. This group included many women and children. But the supply ships Raleigh sent to the colony failed to arrive. When help got there in 1590, none of the settlers could be found.

History experts still are not sure what happened. Some research suggests that at least some of the settlers became part of the Indian tribe that lived iii the area.

One reason for the delay in getting supplies to Roanoke was the attack of the Spanish Navy against England in 1588. King Phillip of Spain had decided to invade England. But the small English ships combined with a fierce storm defeated the huge Spanish fleet. As a result, Spain was no longer able to block English exploration.

England discovered that supporting colonies so far away was extremely costly. So Queen Elizabeth took no more action to do this. It was not until after her death in 1603 that England began serious efforts to start colonies in America.

(30)

A.To celebrate Queen Elizabeth's birthday.

B.To show respect for Queen Elizabeth.

C.To honor his half brother Sir Humphrey Gilbert.

Go for It! While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across quite a sight. It was not a world record broken, but a show of determination. The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started so they were disqualified(取消资格). That left only one to compete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is what's important. I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that he was not out for gold. His arms were flailing(乱摆)in an attempt at freestyle. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor. I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally be made his turn to start back. You could tell he was tired out. But in those few difficult strokes(划动), the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shouted things like, "Come on, you can do it!" and "Go for it!" He did. When this young man finally finished his race, the crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man did his best. Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone raced. His country had been asked to Sydney as a polite gesture. But this man gave his all; he knew that he had no chance, but he competed because of the spirit of the game. I saw a world record being broken while watching the Olympics the other night.A.True

The Greatest Show on Earth

The Olympic Games (奥林匹克运动会) are the greatest festival of sport in the world. Every four years, a hundred or more countries send their best sportsmen to compete (竞赛) for the highest honors in sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals(奖牌) and glory. But there is honor, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is in spirit of the Olympics-to take part is what matters.

The Olympic Games always start in a bright color and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony(仪式) and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first. For it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held-the host country-marches in last.

The runner with the Olympic torch (火炬) then enters the stadium(体育场) and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath (誓言) on behalf of all the competitors(竞赛者). The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium the host country puts on a wonderful display.

The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field (田径) , but it is a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in a different sport-riding, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded (颁发) for the individual winners and for national teams.

More and more women are taking part in the games. They first competed in 1900, in tennis and golf, which are no longer held in the Olympics. Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912. But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now, they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as the men.

What is the basic honor in taking part in the Olympic Games?

A.To win medals.

B.To break world record.

C.To win first places.

D.To take part in the Games.
