SECTION B INTERVIEW

Directions: In this section you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Questions 1 to 5 are based on an interview. At the end of the interview you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following five questions.

Now listen to the interview.

听力原文:Peter: Hi, Susan.

Susan: Hi, Peter. It's Friday again. Anything particular you want to do at the weekend?

Peter: No, nothing particular in mind. Maybe tonight I'll go to a pub with some friends for the happy hour. You know, drinks are half price at weekends. And I don't have to get up very early tomorrow. Saturday morning, that's the time for washing my ear, doing the laundry and then going out for brunch.

Susan: That's breakfast and lunch combined, right?

Peter: Yes, that's it. You can spend two hours or more over brunch. It's a huge meal. You can have all the breakfast things, as well as all sorts of lunch things, such as salads, chicken, pies, and fruit. It's not expensive. You just pay seven pounds per person. For that you can eat as much as you like. It's a good time for all the family.

Susan: Oh, that sounds good.

Peter: What do you usually do at weekends?

Susan: On Sundays I have a lot of newspapers to read.

Peter: So do I.

Susan: I sit in the garden, over a cup of coffee with a continental breakfast, and read the Sunday newspapers.

Peter: Relax. How about Saturdays?

Susan: Oh, I usually go to a club to play chess with some friends. I love the game very much.

Peter: It's great fun, isn't it?

Susan: Yes, lots of fun. I enjoy playing chess on Saturdays.

Peter: I've never played chess. But I'd like to learn it some day. Is it difficult to learn?

Susan: No, not at all. I can teach you if you like.

(A week later. Now Susan is teaching Peter how to play chess.)

Peter: Could you teach me how to play chess now?

Susan: Yes. It's a board game played by two persons.

Peter: How many pieces does each person have?

Susan: Sixteen pieces. Each player has 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, 1 King, 1 Queen and 8 Pawns. One person uses the light coloured pieces and the other plays with the dark coloured pieces. The colours are always called "White" and "Black", even if they are cream and red. At the beginning of the game, the pieces are set up on the chessboard as shown in the picture.

Peter: Oh, I see.

Susan: There are sixty four squares on the board. The rows of squares across the board are called "Ranks".

Peter: You mean the horizontal rows?

Susan: Yes. The rows of squares up and down, I mean the vertical rows, are called "Files". Lines of squares running diagonally are called "Diagonals".

Peter: How to move the pieces?

Susan: There are some rules. Each of the pieces has to move in a certain way. The players take it in turns to move their pieces and can move only one piece in each turn. Once you have touched a piece, you must move it. After you have moved it and taken your hand away, you must leave the piece where it is.

Peter: So, you are not allowed to change your mind?

Susan: No. Each player has 2 knights, a King's Knight and a Queen's Knight. They are shaped like a horse head. The Knight is the only piece which can jump over pieces. It can jump over pieces of its own colour, or over enemy's pieces. The Knight can move in any direction, forwards, backwards or to either side, but it always has to move three squares at a time. When the Knight moves, it must go two squares in one direction and then one square to the side.

Peter: I have to remember this. What is the aim of the game?

Susan: Well. It's to trap your opponent's King, so it can't escape being captured. That is, there are no squares for it to escape to, no pieces to protect it and no piece to capture the checking piece. When this happens it is called checkmate and the player with the checking piece, or pieces, wins.

Peter: I'm afraid I need a

A.Go to a pub for a drink.

B.Do some washing.

C.Go to the church.

D.Have a big brunch.

听力原文: Have you ever felt your mind got confused after a sleepless night? You couldn't come up with an original thought no matter how hard you tried.

You were probably right if you thought that was caused by a lack of sleep. Dr. Home, a sleep researcher in England, studied 24 college students divided into two groups. One group got their normal eight hours of sleep. The other group didn't get the smallest amount of sleep--they stayed awake all night. The next day, Dr. Home tested the students. He asked them questions that required creative and original thinking. One of the questions was "How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?"

The results? The wide-awake students did well on the tests. The tired students did poorly.

Research has already shown that tired people can do okay on tests of routine thinking, like simple addition. But Dr. Home tested creative thinking only.

As part of his study, he offered an amount of money as a reward to the sleepy students if they did well. But even this encouragement wasn't enough to help the students overcome their tiredness. They still did poorly. Dr. Home believes that the cerebral cortex--the part of the brain where thinking takes place--may get worn out during waking hours. Sleep may help to repair the brain overnight. "Without any sleep," he emphasizes, "even if you concentrate harder, you cannot do better." This study gives people something to think about, especially people like hospital workers and airline pilots, who must stay awake all night and then make emergency decisions.

(33)

A.The lack of sleep.

B.The difficult question.

C.The requirement of your creative thinking.

D.The requirement of your original thinking.

听力原文:W: It's fantastic to meet you here, John. I'm also your fan.

M: Thank you.

W: Before we start the interview, could you please sign my favourite CD for me?

M: My pleasure.

W: Tons of thanks. All these years, there must have been a lot of music companies asking you to join them.

M: Yes, you are right.

W: Then why did you choose Rock?

M: It was mainly because of their sincerity. They agreed that I do not need to do too many promotions, and they also give me freedom. Besides, I do mind whether the media only concentrate on how much money I earn when I sign a contract.

W: But isn't money important to you?

M: I think money for me is not the most important issue. Rock is a Taiwan-based company, but they make me, a Hong kong singer, feel .that I am yew important to them. They really touch me.

W: Also, you can see that they have put in effort into making singers' albums.

M: Yeah, the quality is quite high. If I were a consumer, I would buy a high-quality product.

W: Your point is well taken. However, not many fans in Hongkong know how to distinguish between good and bad music. Maybe your target market is not them.

M: I don't really care about the Hongkong market. I know it is very irresponsible to say this, but it is true. My next album is going to be a Mandarin one.

W: A Mandarin one?

M: Yeah. I was also very surprised when Rock approached me and asked me to concentrate on Mandarin albums. Previously, my songs were all in Cantonese. If you were the head of the company, would you ask me to produce Cantonese albums rather than Mandarin ones?

W: Of course, and the songs will be very commercialized, too.

M: It proves that Rock doesn't treat me as a money-making artist.

(23)

A.Rock allowed him much freedom.

B.Rock didn't treat him as a money machine.

C.Rock cooperated with him with great sincerity.

D.Rock didn't ask him to do much for promotions.

听力原文:M: Hi Diana, mind if I sit down?

W: Not at all, Jerry. How have you been?

M: Good. But I'm surprised to see you on the city bus. Is your car in the shop?

W: No. I've just been thinking a lot about the environment lately. I think the air will be a lot cleaner if we all use public transportation when we could.

M: You are right. The diesel bus isn't exactly pollution free.

W: True. But they'll be running a lot cleaner soon. We were just talking about that in my environmental engineering class.

M: What's the city going to do? Install pollution filters in the buses?

W: They could, but those filters make the engines work harder and really cut down on fuel efficiency. Instead they found a way to make their engines more efficient.

M: How?

W: Well, there is a material called the coniine oxide. It's a really good insulator. And a thick coat of it gets sprayed on the certain part of the engine.

M: An insulator?

W: Yeah. Actually, what it does is to reflect back the heat of burning fuel. So the fuel will bum more completely.

M: Sounds like people should all go out and get this stuff to spray their car engines.

W: Well, it's not really that easy. You first have to heat the material over 10,000 degrees and then, well, you get the idea. It's not something you or I can do ourselves.

(27)

A.How to produce pollution free bus.

B.How to prevent our environment from being polluted.

C.Whether to ride a passenger bus or a private car.

D.How to reduce the pollutants produced by bus.

Landing a Job of the Future Takes a Two-Track Mind

If you're gearing up for a job search now as an undergraduate or returning student, there are several bright spots where new jobs and promising career paths are expected to emerge in the next few years.

Technology, health care and education will continue to be hot job sectors, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' outlook for job growth between 2008 and 2018. But those and other fields will yield new opportunities, and even some tried-and-true fields will bring some new jobs that will combine a variety of skill sets.

The degrees employers say they'll most look for include finance, engineering and computer science, says Andrea Koncz, employment-information manager at the National Association of Colleges and Employers. But to land the jobs that will see some of the most growth, job seekers will need to branch out and pick up secondary skills or combine hard science study with softer skills, career experts say, which many students already are doing. "Students are positioned well for future employment, particularly in specialized fields." Ms. Koncz says.

Career experts say the key to securing jobs in growing fields will be coupling an in-demand degree with expertise in emerging trends. For example, communications pros will have to master social media and the analytics that come with it; nursing students will have to learn about risk management and electronic records; and techies will need to keep up with the latest in Web marketing, user-experience design and other Web-related skills.

Technology Twists

More than two million new technology-related jobs are expected to be created by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs that are expected to grow faster than average include computer-network administrators, data-communications analysts and Web developers. Recruiters anticipate that data-loss prevention, information technology, online security and risk management will also show strong growth.

A computer science degree and a working knowledge of data security are critical to landing these jobs. Common areas of undergraduate study for these fields include some of the usual suspects, such as computer science, information science and management-information systems.

But those might not be enough. That's because not all of those jobs will be purely techie in nature. David Foote, chief executive officer of IT research firm Foote Partners, advises current computer science students to couple their degrees with studies in marketing, accounting or finance. "Before, people widely believed that all you needed to have were deep, nerdy (对社会无用的) skills," Mr. Foote says. "But companies are looking for people with multiple skill sets who can move fluidly with marketing or operations."

Social media has opened the door to the growth of new kinds of jobs. As companies turn to sites like Twitter, Linked In and Face book to promote their brands, capture new customers and even post job openings, they will need to hire people skilled in harnessing these tools, Mr. Foote says. In most cases, these duties will be folded into a marketing position, although large companies such as Coca-Cola Co. arc creating entire teams devoted exclusively to social media.

Similarly, employment for public-relations positions should increase 24% by 2018. Job titles like interactive creative director will reflect the duality of the required skill sets.

Back to School

Students will have to study strategy to maximize relationships between third-party content providers and their company's Web team. Other key skills will be search engine optimization to maximize Web traffic and marketing analytics to decipher the company's target demographic, says Donna Farrugia, executive director of Creative Group, a marketing and advertising staffing agency in Menlo Park, Calif.
