Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: If I had to name a single great invention of mankind, I would say language. There has been no greater invention, because if there were no language, most of man's inventions would not have been made. Though there are other means of communications like signals in war, signs made with hands, and facial expressions, they are not as powerful as language. The communication possible through these means is limited. Language made it possible for man to share his thoughts, his questions and his knowledge with his fellow beings. Knowledge gained by one generation could become the basis of inventions of the next generation only because of language. The written word and the printed word were the two next greatest inventions. Can you imagine our world with everything else but without printed pages? The modern world functions on the strength of the printed word. There would be no universities, no business contracts, no political treaties, and no newspapers, if we did not have the printed word.

(27)

A.Language was the first invention of mankind.

B.There was no greater invention than language.

C.Most of man's inventions depended on language.

D.There were so many languages in the world.

Dear Sirs,

First, we would like to recap our discussion with you regarding market position of "Peony" brand toilet rolls in Pakistan. We explained to you in detail about the problems faced by dealers in marketing the above item. Your delegation also had the opportunity to personally listen to the comments of individual dealers. We now summarize the market position as follows. Toilet paper is not used by a majority of the population of our country. In fact, it is not customary to use toilet paper for domestic purposes. Consumption of this product is mostly limited to hotels, restaurants, some offices, and a very small fraction of private households.

Having said that, there is a still bigger problem which has to be solved in order to maximize sales. Your corporation ships the goods from Qingdao mostly on transshipment vessels via Hong Kong and Singapore. Due to the limitations of this shipping method, the goods usually arrive here four or five months after shipment from Qingdao. A recent example is a lot of 285 cartons that was shipped to us on vessel "Yatlung" from Qingdao on 19 November 1978. These goods actually reached us near the end of April 1979, over five months after the shipment was originally made. We have enclosed herewith copies of the shipping documents showing this fact.

In view of this problem, we urge you to begin shipping your goods on direct vessels or with shipping companies that offer express service, so that dealers can repeat their orders after receipt of a consignment(交货), and we can sell more of your product in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, thank you for your attention and we wish to assure you of our usual best attention and efforts in facilitating and encouraging sales of "Peony" toiletpaper in Pakistan.

What is the letter about?

It's about problems with sales of ______ in Pakistan.

听力原文: For most people, reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. I'm sure in a hundred years we will still be reading newspapers.

What basically makes news is what affects our lives -the big political stories the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do - as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I'm pretty sure that is how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about the competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it's never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

29.What does the speaker say about news in the future?

30.What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?

31.What does the speaker think of different media?

(30)

A.It will cover more big political affairs.

B.It will cover less disasters.

C.It will cover more scientific research.

D.It won't be printed in publishing houses.

Dear Sir,

After reading some of the letters printed in this newspaper, I'm beginning to believe that the carbon monoxide in this city's air during the past year has already affected some people's ability to think straight.

The proposal for limiting the use of ears seems fair and reasonable to me. I can't feel that it will produce any real suffering on the part of motorists, who sometimes seem to put their rights to drive above the public's right to breathe.

Surely everyone understand that it would be worse to have to wear gas masks in our city than to ride buses or trains. After all, breathing is necessary, and we might all breathe more easily ff we could reduce the amount of pollution in our air.

The letters referred to in the first paragraph must have ______.

A.complained that carbon monoxide had affected their own ability to think

B.complained that carbon monoxide had affected other people's ability think

C.opposed the limiting of the use of cars

D.proposed the limiting of the use of cars
