第1题

听力原文:W: This is 20 hours Greenwich meantime. I'm Carol. Thank you for tuning in for this hour's interview with Mr. Steve McCrery,

the photojournalist for National Geographic. Good evening, Steve. Thanks for coming tonight.

M: Good evening, Carol, and good evening, everybody.

W: Steve, we have got here your new book, South Southeast here. Rather impressive.

M: Thank you.

W: So would you like to say something about it first?

M: This is actually a diary recording more than 20 years of my photojournalism in Asia. As you might have noticed, there are

many pictures in the book taken in the region.

W: Yes. Very appealing pictures you've shot there. But why does Asia interest you so much?

M: Because of its rapid transformation. There is always something new, something inspiring for me every time I get there.

W: I see now. I'm still curious about one thing. Photography, to many of us, is always associated with waiting or wasting of

time. Steve, tell me, during all these years, did you ever lose patience at work?

M: No, not really. Good shots are rewarding.

W: Yes, of course. And what else do you think makes a good journalist besides patience?

M: Well, I guess it is courage. I mean the courage to take risks.

W: I see. Like the risk you took in Afghanistan in 1979.

M: I was 50 that year. That was a turning point of my career life.

W: But have you ever been scared with danger or death?

M: Well, that's another story.

(24)

A.A magazine he has been working for.

B.A place the photo journalist has been to.

C.A series of pictures he has taken.

D.A book he has written.

第2题

听力原文:W: You know, I've often wondered why people laugh at the picture of a big belly businessman slipping on a banana skin and falling on his bottom. We are to feel sorry for him.

M: Actually, Laura, I think we laugh because we are glad it didn't happen to us. But of course there is also a kind of humorous satisfaction in seeing somebody self-important making a fool of themselves.

W: Yes, and then there are a lot of jokes about people who are too fat or physically handicapped, you know, deaf, or short-sighted, things like that. After all, it's not really funny to be like that.

M: Oh, I think that's because we're embarrassed. We don't know how to cope with the situation. Perhaps we are even a bit frightened we might get like that, so we laugh. What about the custard pie routine?

W: What do you mean "custard pie routine"?

M: You know, all those old films where someone gets so outraged with his boss, he picks up a custard pie and plasters it all over the other person's face.

W: That never makes me laugh very much, because you can guess it's going to happen. But a lot of people still find it laughable. It must be because it's the sort of the thing we'd all love to do once in a while and never quite have the courage to.

M: I had an old aunt who used to throw cups of tea at people when she was particularly irritated. She said it relieved her feelings.

W: It must have come a bit expensive.

M: Not really. She took care never to throw her best china.

Questions:

19. Why does the man say we laugh when we see some self-important people making fools of themselves?

20. Why do some people joke about those who are fat or handicapped according to the man?

21. Why do many people find it funny to see someone throwing a custard pie on their boss's face?

(23)

听力原文:W: David, sorry for my school board meeting last night so late. I've been working on a special project with the school board, and I like your opinion on it.

M: What is it?

W: I've been trying to find a way to encourage reading.

M: Tell me about it. I work with families everyday, Eva. I see how people spend their leisure time --young and old.

W: Mostly watching TV. Well, that would be OK, if people took the time to read.

M: I couldn't agree with you more.

W: The question is, how do we get them to read more?

M: I think you are going to give me the answer to that question. You have that look in your eye.

W: I do have the answer, or at least I think I do. The plan is a simple one. Involve the entire family in a reading project. But first in the schoolrooms. By arranging with the public schools to schedule one hour a week--to start with. During that time, parents are invited to attended to read along with the children.

M: It can go beyond the school system.

W: Really?

M: I guarantee you it would go very well in the hospitals. My patients--mostly kids--would love to read or to be read to.

W: I love the idea. In that way, we can spend more time together. You and I are very busy these days, we need to find more time to be together, to do things together. That would be wonderful.

B.She settled every problem by discussing with her husband.
