Hares and Rabbits One of the gentlest of all anima...

Hares and Rabbits One of the gentlest of all animals is the hare. When you consider how mild this animal is, you might wonder how it can survive in a world full of enemies. But then you've also probably noticed its strong hind(后面的)legs. Those legs give it plenty of speed. And you know how rapidly hares and rabbits breed(繁殖). That’s another reason why they manage to survive. Hares and rabbits have long, sharp front teeth. Their hind legs are longer than their front legs so that they run faster uphill than downhill. When they are hunted, they use tricks such as taking huge leaps to break the smell or signal danger to each other by hitting the ground with their hind feet. Hares and rabbits are purely vegetarians(素食者). They can live very well on the inner bark f trees. There are many differences between hares and rabbits. Hares are larger, and their feet and ears are longer. Hares do not dig holes or live in groups, as do rabbits. Hares are born pen-eyed and with thick fur, while rabbits are born blind and hairless. North America is the home of many different types of hares. One of the best known is the jack hare, a large hare with very long ears. Jacks are so fast that they can sometimes make a leap of six meters. The March hare, whom we know from Alice in Wonderland, is a common European hare. In March, they are always busy in mating, thus acquiring its name. Unlike hares, rabbits are social animals, living together in holes. A rabbit may mate when it is six months old and its young are born within a month. So if the rabbit has no natural enemies, it can become quite a pest. People are curious about the survival of the hare because_____.A.their legs are not strong enough

B.their growth is not fast enough

C.they are too gentle

D.they run too slow

Hares and rabbits use tricks when they_____.A.run uphill

B.are hunted

C.signal danger

D.take huge leaps

Rabbits' natural enemies prevent them from_____.A.becoming a big trouble

B.breeding when young

C.living in holes

D.becoming social animals

Compared with hares, rabbits_____.A.have longer feet

B.have thicker fur

C.are born pen-eyed

D.like to live in groups

Many people get to know the March hare from the fact that it_____.A.has long ears and legs

B.digs a lot of holes in March

C.can make a leap of six meters

D.appears in Alice in Wonderland

On cold days in Delhi, the poor light bonfires (篝火) of tyres, trees and rags whose fumes mix with the exhaust from the citys 2 million vehicles to form. a thick smog. On most days in Mexico City, a blanket of pollution cuts off views of the surrounding mountains. On one famous occasion it got so bad that birds fell dead out of the sky on to the Zocalo, the citys main square. Throughout the developing world, smogs in many big cities are getting worse as more people use cars and more manufacturing firms are belching out (喷出) pollution. Congestion is on the rise, too- according to one estimate, a car in Bangkok now spends the equivalent of 40 days a year stuck in traffic. The air in Asias cities, like the water in its rivers, is particularly unhealthy, containing levels of dust and smoke several times higher than in the rich countries cities. Environmentalists in the developed world also worry about air pollution in poorer countries, not just out of the goodness of their hearts but because they fear it may affect their own backyard. Carbon-dioxide emissions, thought to be the cause of global warming, are growing particularly fast in developing countries. So are emissions of sulphur dioxide, blamed for acid rain, which sometimes falls hundreds of miles from the source of the pollution. But the harm that air pollution causes in the developing countries themselves is much more serious and immediate. The biggest concern are indoor air pollution, lead emissions and small particles. Indoor pollution in poor countries is not much talked about, but it is often as damaging to health as smoking cigarettes. Around a third of all energy consumed in developing countries comes from wood, crop residues and dung, which are often burnt in poorly designed stoves within ill-ventilated (通风很差的) huts. Studies of women in India and Nepal exposed to smoke from such fuels show that their death rates from chronic respiratory disease are similar to those of heavy smokers. Lead has long been known to be dangerous in large doses. But only since the 1970s have scientists been aware that relatively small quantities of lead in the bloodstream can be harmful to humans. In particular, many studies show a correlation between levels of lead in childrens blood and lower IQ scores, hearing loss and hyperactivity (活动过度). But the kind of air pollution thought to cause the most damage to human health in developing countries is that from small particles. Caused by vehicle exhausts, coal-burning smoke from factories and dust stirred up by vehicles, these particles easily find their way into peoples lungs. Studies the world over have shown a strong positive correlation between small particles in the air and death rates.

The first paragraph is engaged in______.

A.describing several world famous cities in developing countries

B.illustrating the seriousness of environmental problems in developing countries

C.drawing a picture about the seriously polluted future world

D.comparing the pollution problems in developed and developing countries

听力原文: ALAKMED by the non-stop reduction in the amount of total arable land, the ministry of Land and Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture have jointly issued a notice to protect basic farmland.

The notice issued last week requires the governments at different levels, especially those at county and village levels, to include the farmland as stipulated by the regulations in their respective basic arable-land protection zones.

The arable land along highways and railroads, and on the outskirts of the cities, villages and townships should all be taken into account in the establishment of basic farmland protection zones, according to the notice.

Cases of illegally occupying and destroying farmland will be strictly checked and the responsible persons and units should be punished severely, the notice said.

China has had a legal system to protect its basic farmland since 1994, according to Tang Mingcai, director of the Farmland Protection Department of the Ministry of Land and Resoures.

The land administrations are in charge of protecting the quantity of basic farmland, while the agricultural administrations are responsible for conserving the quality.

The newly revised State Land Administration Law and the National Regulations on protecting the Basic Farmland, which took effect earlier this year, have pat 80 percent of the country's farmland under strict protection.

The national overall plan on land use says the country's basic arable land under protection amounts to 108,562 million hectares in total area.

Nearly 397,000 hectares of the farmland have been lost to economic expansion and severe natural disasters in the past two years, according to statistics from the Ministry of Land and Resources.

In 1998, 261,300 hectares of farmland were lost because of floods.

The grass-roots governments are largely responsible for approving farmland for other use, thus reducing the amount of land available for growing crops, according to the Ministry of Land and Resources.

The notice issued by the Ministry of Land and Resources and the Ministry Agriculture requires that ______.

A.basic farmland protection zones should be established

B.illegally occupying and destroying farmland should be punished

C.a legal system to protect basic farmland be set up

D.A and B
