听力原文: Researchers do not know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colours remind people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is low during the winter, the sunlight appears quite blue. Because the sun is higher during the summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.

People associate colours with different holidays. For example, red is associated with Valentine's Day. On February 14th, Americans send red hearts to people they love. People associate orange with Halloween in October and Thanksgiving Day in November. On October 31 st, many Americans put large orange pumpkins in their windows for Halloween. Many people wear green on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Violet is a dignified colour which is associated with Easter. On Easter Sunday, people decorate baskets with purple ribbons.

Many expressions in English use colours. These expressions show how people feel about the colours. For example, people associate red with a strong feeling like anger. When someone is very angry, people say that he or she sees red. Red is an active colour. A red-letter day is a lucky day. When criminals are caught in the middle of a crime, people say that they are caught red-handed. Green is the colour of grass and leaves. When someone grows plants well, people say he or she has green fingers. Blue is a sad, thoughtful colour. When someone is very sad, people say he or she is feeling blue. Blues is a kind of jazz that is usually very sad and slow.

Is Halloween celebrated where you live? In the United States and Canada, Halloween is widely known and celebrated every year on October 31. Halloween customs, though, can be found in many other parts of the globe. In some places holidays are celebrated that, although named differently, share similar themes: contact with the spirit world involving the spirits of the dead, the devil and angels. Personally, you may not believe in supernatural spirits. You might simply view taking part in Halloween and similar celebrations as a way to have fun and teach your children to explore their imagination. Many people, though, regard these celebrations as harmful for the following reasons: Firstly,Halloween is actually related to the prospect of contact with spiritual forces, many of which threaten or frighten. Likewise, many celebrations like Halloween have religious origins and are deeply rooted in ancestor worship(祖先崇拜). Even today, people around the world use these days to make contact with supposed spirits of the dead. Secondly, although Halloween has been viewed mainly as an American holiday, each year people in more and more countries have been adopting it. Many newcomers to the celebration, however, are unaware of the religious origins of Halloween symbols, decorations, and customs, most of which are related to supernatural beings and supernatural forces. Thirdly, thousands of people, who follow ancient Celts(凯尔特人), still call Halloween by the ancient name Samhain and consider it to be the most sacred night of the year. Others dont realize it, while theyre celebrating the Celtic holiday. In view of the foregoing, it is wise for you to know about the dark origins of Halloween and similar celebrations. Having this fuller understanding may help you decide whether to participate in these holidays.

According to the author, the theme of Halloween is to______.

A.celebrate the harvest season

B.spread religious teachings

C.contact the spirit of the dead

D.help children explore their imagination

第3题

Halloween (October 31) is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries. (万圣节(10月31日)是一个在很多国家用不同名字广泛庆祝的节日。)Although it originated as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is now celebrated largely as a children's day, and many American children look forward to it for days and weeks beforehand.

The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it, and a candle placed inside as decorations in the window. City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins for decorations. Some years ago, the holiday was celebrated by dressing up in strange and frightening costumes and playing tricks on one's neighbors and friends, such as ringing door bells, throwing bits of corn on the window panes, and in other ways making minor disturbances. More recently, children come to the door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and guess who they are behind the false faces and receive treats of candy, fruit or cookies. They say, "Trick or Treat", meaning "I will play a trick on you if you do not give me a treat."

This practice has even more recently developed into a significant international activity. Instead of or along with candy, the children collect money for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). This special collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world is known as "UNICEF Trick or Treat".
