Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: In ancient times, many people believed the earth was a flat disc. Well over 2,000 years ago, the ancient Greek philosophers were able to put forward two good arguments proving that it was not. Direct observation Of heavenly bodies was the basis of both these arguments. First, the Greeks knew that during eclipses of the moon, the earth was between the sun and the moon, and they saw that during these eclipses, the earth's shadow on the moon was always round, they realized that this could be true only if the earth was spherical. If the earth were a flat disc, then its shadow during eclipses would not be a perfect circle, it would be stretched out into a long ellipse. The second argument was based on what the Greeks saw during their travels. They noticed that the North Star, or Polaris, appeared lower in the sky when they traveled south, in more northerly regions, the North Star appeared to them to be much higher in the sky. By the way, it was also from this difference in the apparent position of the North Star that the Greeks first calculated the approximate distance around the circumference of the earth, a figure recorded in ancient documents says 400,000 stadia, that's the plural of the word stadium. Today, it's not known exactly what length one stadium represents, but let's say it was about 200 meters, the length of many athletic stadiums. This would make the Greek's estimate about twice the figure accepted today, a very good estimate for those writing so long before even the fast telescope was invented.
According to the professor, what were, the beliefs of the Greek philosophers based upon?
A.How the natural world was described in Greek mythology.
B.What they observed directly.
C.The writings of philosophers from other societies.
D.Measurements made with scientific instruments:

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
A massive sandstorm has affected most of northern China, covering the capital Beijing in a dense dust and reducing visibility to less than 50 meters in some areas. The storm is the strongest and most intense this spring, and hit China's north on March with fierce winds.
Sandstorm has posed a serious threat to the air quality and environment. Sandstorms which occurred in ancient times are widely known among in Inner Mongolia as "Huang-mao-feng", meaning "wind that carries yellow sand". In recent years, sandstorms have occurred more frequently, at shorter intervals, and with greater intensity. A sandstorm on Dec. 31st, 2000 was the first one to hit China in decades. From then on, there has been one every month. We cannot help but ask: is this a phenomenon purely powered by Mother Nature, an occurrence over which we have no control? The fact is that they are caused largely by human actions, mainly excessive use and exploitation of grasslands. Under normal conditions, Inner Mongolia provides grazing for up to some forty million sheep. However, as many as seventy million sheep have been feeding on that area.
With the global climate constantly changing, sandstorms are expected to occur more frequently, and humanity will be forced to confront the delayed effects of the exploited environment. It is only recently that some of us, who have been pursuing economic goal, have begun noticing the environmental problems. Perhaps man, who is finally eating his own bitter fruits, will understand that economic development does not have to be at the expense of the environment. In fact, environmental preservation and economic development should go hand in hand. Take herding for example: enclosed herding is better than open herding for preserving grasslands. Therefore, there are choices that could be made in this respect, with consideration for the preservation of the ecosystem.
According to the passage, what kind of environmental problem will sandstorms bring about?
A.It will turn cities dirtier than they used to be.
B.It wilt make people hard to breathe clean air.
C.It will prevent people finding their direction.
D.It will cause serious air pollution in people's life.

In ancient Egypt, as everywhere, pitching stones was a favorite children's game. But a badly thrown rock could hurt a child. Looking for something less dangerous to throw, the Egyptians made what were probably the first balls.
At first, balls were made of grass or leaves held together by vines. Later they were made of piece of animal skin sewed together and stuffed with feathers or hay.
Even though the Egyptians were warlike, they found time for peaceful games. Before long they had developed a number of ball games, each with its own set of rules. Perhaps they played ball more for instruction than for fun. Ball playing was thought of mainly as a way to teach young men the speed and skill they would need for war.
The ball was probably invented because ______.
A.throwing stones often caused injuries
B.throwing stones was not fun
C.games with stones did not have rules
D.rocks were too heavy to throw
