Creepy-crawlies, flies, and plants also join the vacation rush by hitching long-haul rides inside airline baggage.
The research reveals that—like people in many countries—June, July, and August are the peak months for long-distance travel.
Jet-Setting Beetles
Previous studies have shown that international flights are a significant factor in unwelcome insect invasion. Some 73 percent of recorded pest interceptions in the U.S., in fact, occur at airports.
Curious to determine when insects pack their bags and where the bugs are most likely to go, Andrew Tatem and Simon Hay of the University of Oxford in England studied global flight patterns for the 12-month period from May 1,2005 to April 30,2006.
Pest travel between far-flung locations is more likely when the weather is similar in both regions, making it easy for the pests to settle into their new home.
The researchers used rainfall, temperature, and humidity data from each region to work out which places linked by the global flight network had the most similar climates at various times of the year.
"Hawaii, with its moderate year-round climate, is a hot spot for pest invasions," Tatem said. "It is linked to a similar climate in Central America in April, Asia in July, and the Caribbean in October."
In general, though, June, July, and August are the peak months for insect travel.
"There are more airports in the Northern Hemisphere, and the major Southern Hemisphere airports tend to be closer to the Equator," Tatem said. "The June-to- August period stood out as the time when, overall, the busiest flight routes connect geographically distant but climatically similar locations."
According to the article, what is the main cause of insect invasions?
A.Changing wind patterns.
B.Unusually hot temperatures.
C.International flights.
D.Changes in agricultural chemicals.

"It's quite a risky job," says Giorgio Pezzuto of D'Appolonia, an engineering company in Italy.
D'Appolonia, working with eight other companies, may have an answer: a three-ton robot called Roboclimber. "The idea is to operate a machine far away that can drill without a human being on board," says Pezzuto, manager for the project, which is supported by the European Commission. Engineers claim that the machine will be faster and cheaper than manual labor. The robot, a large radio-controlled four-legged mechanical spider, has cost at least $2 million so far. The final product should be able to climb unstable mountainsides, drill holes, insert bars and cement, and collect data on the slope's stability. Testing should begin in May.
The underlined word "event" in the first paragraph refers to______.
A.landslide
B.machine
C.earthquake
D.flood

A, B, C, D, and E. All of these viruses can cause an acute disease with

Hepatitis C (HCV) is the most prevalent liver disease in the world.
The World Health Organization consider Hepatitis C an epidemic. 【S3】______
Because Hepatitis C can infect a patient for decades after being 【S4】______
discovered, it is often called the "silent" epidemic. According to the
Center for Disease Control (CDC), 20-30% of people with chronic
Hepatitis C will eventually face life-threatened symptoms. 【S5】______
Currently, it is estimated there are about 270 to 300 million people
worldwide who are infected with HCV, 4 million of who are in the 【S6】______
United States. The prevalence seems to be high in Eastern Europe than 【S7】______
in Western Europe. In industrialized countries, HCV accounts of 20% 【S8】______
of cases of acute hepatitis, 70% of cases of chronic hepatitis, 40%
of cases of end-stage cirrhosis (硬化), 60% of cases of liver cancer
and 30-40% of liver transplants. The incidence of new symptomatic
infections of HCV have been estimated to be 13 cases out of 100,000 【S9】______
people annually. For every one person that is infected with the AIDS
virus, there are more than four infected with HCV. The CDC (Center
for Disease Control) estimates that there arc up to 26,000 new HCV

A.The slow-moving water near the ocean bottom mixes so slowly with water closer to the surface that sludge dumped on the ocean bottom would be decomposed by bacteria before currents could bring it to the surface.
B.Many locations on the ocean bottom far from coasts are geologically stable, and unlikely to be disrupted by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
C.Deep-sea marine plants and animals in the human food chain live at depths far above the ocean bottom.
D.Dumping large amounts of sludge would have an unknown effect on organisms that live on the ocean bottom.
E.The technology exists to lower sewage sludge to ocean-bottom dump sites without contaminating waters closer to the surface.
