Why We Must Fire Bad Teachers

The relative decline of American education at the elementary- and high-school levels has long been a national embarrassment as well as a threat to the nation&39;s future. Once upon a time, American students tested better than any other students in the world. Now, ranked against European schoolchildren, America does about as well as Lithuania, behind at least 10 other nations.

For much of this time—roughly the last half century—professional educators believed that if they could only find the right pedagogy, the right method of instruction, all would be well. They tried New Math, open classrooms, Whole Language—but nothing seemed to achieve significant or lasting improvements.

Yet in recent years researchers have discovered something that may seem obvious, but for many reasons was overlooked or denied. What really makes a difference, what matters more than the class size or the textbook, the teaching method or the technology, or even the curriculum, is the quality of the teacher. Much of the ability to teach is innate—an ability to inspire young minds as well as control unruly classrooms that some people instinctively possess (and some people definitely do not). Teaching can be taught, to some degree, but not the way many graduate schools of education do it, with a lot of insipid or marginally relevant theorizing and pedagogy. In any case the research shows that within about five years, you can generally tell who is a good teacher and who is not.

As we do, we must bear in mind that none are more committed to ending poverty than thepoor themselves. Often, all they lack is the guidance and the tools to get rid of poverty.//

Therefore, it requires all citizens to actively participate in policy-making, and governments tobecome more accountable to their citizens in their efforts to achieve their goals.//

Today, we join hands with the poor in a collective effort. This is a close and extensivecooperation which brings together civil society, the private sectors, and individuals around theworld.

School bullying is quite common in most schools. According to the American psychological

Association, approximately 40% to 80% of school-age children experience bullying at some point during their school careers. Regardless of the grade level, socioeconomic environment, gender and religion, bullying can happen to anyone. Teachers need to have a certain level of awareness of this issue. This starts with understanding the three forms of bullying: physical, verbal and emotional.

Physical bullying is any unwanted physical contact between the bully and the victim. It is the most identifiable form. of all. Verbal bullying is any injurious language or statement that causes the victim’s emotional suffering. Emotional bullying is any form. of bullying that causes damanges to a victim’s emotional well-being.

The consequence of school bullying might be horrible. It is a major cause of school shooting. School shooters that died or committed suicide left behind evidence that they had been bullied. Therefore, enough attention should be given and practical measures should be taken by the school administration to address this issue.

Education has long been embraced as one of the best ways to combat inequality. Yet, this

faith in the power of education has begun to falter. There is mounting evidence that improving our education system won’t do much to fix inequality.

Modern inequality isn’t driven by the gap between college-educated workers and high school grads. All the action is at the top of the income ladder, where the extremely rich have pulled away from everyone else.

Since 1979, wages for the top 1 percent in the United States have grown nine times faster than wages for the bottom 90 percent. That’s not a tale of the well-educated doing better than the less-well-educated. It’s about the super-rich out-earning everyone else—including college graduates, who haven’t gotten a raise in over a decade.
