I was due to take my driving test at 11:30 am. It was a rainy morning with low clouds and

as I approached the driving school at 9:50 am, my heart sank. My driving instructor, Stan, said something, trying to drive away my fears, but I was not impressed. We set off for the test centre with an hour to go. I wanted a run round the test circuit (圈) , but we got stuck in a traffic jam, and could only drive no faster than walking. We arrived at the test centre at 11 am. Stan made me watch a group of six learners emerging from the building with their respective (个自的) examiners. Their instructors were looking out from two windows. We watched them drive off. They must have been feeling very nervous. Stan took me round the probable test track, pointing out the traps. The weather became even worse. It seemed to make me feel worse too. I had developed a couldn’t-care-less mood, and was almost calm. We returned to the test centre in time to see the six unfortunates returning. Their nerves must have been in a terrible state. I sat in the waiting room until six examiners came in to call out our respective names. Mine showed no emotion as he asked me to go to my car. I showed none either, but the tension began mounting again. On their way to the test center, Stan tried to comfort the author ___________ . A. but it made the author’s heart sink deeper

听力原文: As my train was not due to leave for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare. After buying some newspapers to read on the journey, I made my way to the luggage office to collect my suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting. I took out my wallet to find the receipt for my case. Unfortunately, it was nowhere to be found.

When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. He then handed me a form. and told me to make a list of the chief contents of the case. Only when they were correct could I take the case away. I racked my brain trying to remember all the articles I had packed in a hurry. After I had filled out the form, I went to look among the shelves. There were hundreds of cases and for one dreadful moment I began to worry that someone might have already claimed my case. To my great relief, the case was lying on its side high up in a corner. After I had examined the items inside, the assistant told me to take the case away. Again I took out my wallet: this time to pay. I pulled out a ten-shilling note and the "lost" receipt flipped out with it. Blushing, I looked up at the assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often seen this happen.

(23)

A.A Trip by Train.

B.The "Lost" Receipt.

C.An Embarrassing Moment.

D.At the Luggage Office.

听力原文:M: May I see Dean Williams please?

W: Dean Williams won't be in the office this afternoon. I'm an assistant dean. Perhaps I can help you.

M: I need an extension for a paper. And my professor said I would have to get a special permission from the dean's office.

W: For what course?

M: Economics 201, Prof. Brown's course.

W: Is this a term paper or a paper written instead of a final exam?

M: It's to take the place of a final exam.

W: So ordinarily, it would be due on the last day of the exam period which is this Friday. That's two days away. Don't you think you could have the paper finished by then?

M: I haven't even started yet. You see, I've been sick since last Saturday with tonsillitis. I just checked out of the infirmary this morning.

W: So you were in the infirmary for four days.

M: Yes, from Saturday until today Wednesday.

W: Generally, for an illness like this, we can postpone an exam or the due day of the paper that takes the place of an exam by the number of days the student has been ill. In your case, by four days.

M: That means I'll be able to hand in my paper next Tuesday instead of this Friday.

W: That's right. But first you'll have to fill out this form, giving the name of the course, your reason for needing the extension and so on. Then take the request to the infirmary to have a sign by the doctor. Then bring it back to me today. I'll have a copy sent to Prof. Brown.

M: Thank you very much. I'll see you later this afternoon with the completed form.

W: I'm glad you're feeling better.

(23)

A.To get medical treatment.

B.To take a final exam.

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: I had to go to Amsterdam last week for a conference. I arrived at the airport in plenty of time and checked in. But I only had one small case, so I decided to take it on the plane as hand-luggage. As the flight was not due to board for45 minutes, I went to a cafe, sat down and ordered a cup of coffee. While I was sitting there, drinking my coffee and reading the paper, I was vaguely aware of a woman and her child coming to sit at the next table. I did not pay much attention to them though. And when my flight was called, I reached for my case and left. An hour later, the plane was in the air and I decided to look at the conference programme to see what I wanted to attend. Imagine my horror when I opened the case and found that it was full of picture books and children's toys. And imagine what the woman must have thought about a case full of men's clothes and scientific papers.

(27)

A.He wanted to find a place to read his papers.

B.He wanted to kill time before boarding the plane.

C.He felt thirsty and wanted some coffee.

D.He went there to meet his friends.

听力原文:W: I'm glad that you have decided to take a look. It's a beautiful property!

M: Yes, it sounds perfect. After I've looked, if I like it, I will bring my wife. She's hav ing a baby. It's due in the spring, so we will be needing a bigger place before them The sooner we can sort this out, the better. I want her to relax and not worry about this.

W: A family always needs more space! And of course you don't want her to worry. Well, I think that this place is just perfect for a new family. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a spacious kitchen and living room.

M: How about a garden? My wife has always imagined a place where she can grow flowers.

W: There is a lovely little back garden, with grass and flowers. Just enough for a small family.

M: That sounds wonderful! She will be ecstatic. How much further is it?

W: Don't worry, it's not too far now. Only a 25 minute drive from our sales office and the traffic on these roads isn't too bad. On a good day you can get there in 15 minutes.

M: Well that is great. My workplace is close to your sales office, so it will be very convenient, no trouble getting to work everyday.

W: Oh, you work near to the office?

M: Yes, in the motor sales company in Million Plaza. Do you know it?

W: Yes of course! My husband bought a car from you last year. He said that the before and after sales service was excellent.

W: Oh, that'd be great. But our video machine is broken.
