第7题

I once knew an old man whose bad memory made him famous. John Smith was so forgetful that
he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes — even his meals. Once he forgot he ate breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbours, "If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!"

Since Smith was a professor at a well known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment. It wasn't that he was not claver, as some critical people tended to say, last very, very absentminded. One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.

The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.

"Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town. " "What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name ! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."

Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time. "What is the matter now? " "As you told me, I didn’t forget where I put the name of that town, but I forgot where I left our children!"

This passage is mainly ______.

A.a careless professor

B.a famous professor

C.a foolish professor

D.a forgetful professor

短文翻译(英译汉)

When I was nine years old living in a small town in North Carolina I found an ad for selling greeting cards in the back of a children’s magazine. I thought to myself I can do this. I begged my mother to let me send for the kit. Two weeks later when the kit arrived, I ripped off the brown paper wrapper, grabbed the cards and dashed from the house. Three hours later, I returned home with no card and a pocket full of money proclaiming “Mama, all the people couldn’t wait to buy my cards!” A salesperson was born.

When I was twelve years old, my father took me to see Zig Ziegler. I remember sitting in that dark auditorium listening to Mr. Ziegler raise everyone’s spirits up to the ceiling, I left there feeling like I could do anything. When we got to the car I turned to my father and said, “Dad, I want to make people feel like that.” My father asked me what I meant, “I want to be a motivational speaker just like Mr. Ziegler.” I replied. A dream was born.

听力原文: Hank lived in a small town, but he got a job in a big city and moved there with his wife and two children.

On the first Saturday in their new home, Hank took his new red car out of the garage and was washing it when a neighbour came by. When he saw Hank's new car, the neighbour stopped and looked at it for a minute. Then Hank turned and saw him. The neighbour said, "That's a nice car. Is it yours?"

"Sometimes," Hank answered.

The neighbour was surprised. "Sometimes?" he said, "What do you mean?"

"Well," answered Hank slowly, "When there's a party in town, it belongs to my daughter, Jane. When there's a football game somewhere, it belongs to my son, Joe. When I've washed it, and it looks really nice and clean, it belongs to my wife. And when it needs gas, it's mine."

Where did Hank and his family live?

A.In a small village.

B.In a large city.

C.In a small town.

I am Lee, a Chinese student studying in the US. Last week while I was getting on a bus I dropped one of my packages and a young man who was also getting on the bus picked it up for me. He seemed nice, so I chatted with him a bit. He said his name is Sam , he was 18 years old and has always lived in this town. His family also lives in town, but he lives alone in a small apartment. He just graduated from high school this year and is now a student at the local university. I asked where he was going, and he said that he was going to work-he has an evening job at a restaurant to make money to pay for university. He said that he doesn’t want to live with his family or ask them for money. I don’t understand why American young people leave home when them reach 18. Is this true for most Americans?
