M: Well, since everyone has enjoyed the last picnic very much, we can just copy it. How about picking up some hamburgers and hot dogs?
W: Okay, but how much hamburger meat are we going to need? And hot dogs too?
M: Uh. How about three pounds of hamburger and a couple packages of hot dogs?
W: Oh, that's not going to be enough. Do you remember the last picnic we want on? Your roommate, David, ate about ten hamburgers all by himself!
M: You're right. Let's see ahem nine pounds of hamburger meat and, uh..., seven packages of hot dogs.
W: And you'd better pick up some chicken for those who don't like hamburger or hot dogs.
M: Okay. How about five or six bags of potato chips?
W: Humm. Better make that eight or so.
M: Okay. What else? Uh, we're going to need some soft drinks. How about ten of these big 2-litor bottles?
W: Sounds fine, but he sure to buy a variety of drinks.
M: Okay. And what about dessert?
W: Well, maybe we could ask Kathy to make a few cherry pies like she did last time.
M: I wouldn't mind that, but you know, she's been very busy working two jobs, so I'd hate to ask her. Hey, why don't you make some cookies? You could ask Susan, the one that moved in across the street! I bet she'd be willing to help you!

听力原文:Man: Come in, Sarah.
Woman: Thanks.
Man: Right. We need to discuss some of the issues raised at the last meeting with your department.
Woman: Yes, there were a lot of questions about computer systems and flexible working hours.
Man: We'll talk about computer systems in a minute, but I think we can leave flexible working hours for the time being. What I'm really very concerned about at the moment, though, is how some staff are working. I'm not at all happy with how long it's taking for some reports on visits to come in. Peter Jones, for instance, hasn't produced a single report on time. The last, on his visit to Berlin was two weeks late. It's not as though they're long reports - they should only take a short time to write.
Woman: I'll certainly warn Peter about getting reports in more quickly but it really comes down to a question of staff training. I think we need to do some workshops on time management.
Man: I agree, but getting consultants in to do the training costs money. It'd be cheaper to use one of our own staff. Have we got anyone who could do it?
Woman: Laura Williams has some management training experience.
Man: She's away on a team building course at the moment, though, isn't she?
Woman: Only 'till next week. I'll speak to her when she gets back. I'm sure she'll be interested.
Man: Now, I'd like to move on to computer systems. As you know, we're going to upgrade our software. The plan was to install it in January but that's proved difficult so it's going in during February because we certainly want it to be ready and running for March.
Woman: Good. I'm worried about the computer skills of some of the staff, though. A few could do with some extra training.
Man: I'm sure you're right. Could we organise that on the premises, do you think?
Woman: Possibly, but it'd be expensive. I know the business college in Park Street has a really good computer section. I've compared their prices with those of the computer training centre at Blackstone and the college prices are far more reasonable.
Man: Let's go for that, then. Will you see to it?
Woman: Certainly. Now, I think this would be a good time to make some office changes before the new software comes in. The Accounts team need a bigger office. At the moment, we've only got five people using the Marketing office on the second floor, so Accounts could take over that office if we moved Marketing to the first floor.
Man: And Human Resources up to the third floor? Yes, that sounds a good idea.
Woman: Great. It'll mean moving a lot of equipment. Accounts keep complaining about some of their equipment. It'd be nice if we could replace it.
Man: We certainly can't replace all of it. What's causing most problems?
Woman: Well, we've had to call technical support in at least once every week for the past two months to deal with the fax machine. The printers were causing trouble but they're working well enough now and everyone complains that the photocopier is slow but it's alright, really.
Man: Right, I'll see what we can do. Now, I have to go in a minute. What do we need to discuss when we meet next week?
Woman: There's the Health and Safety report.
Man: Oh, John Wilkins has already done that.
Woman: Good. What about the programme for the French clients? They're coming at the beginning of next month.
Man: Time is getting short. We'd better deal with that.
Woman: And then what about getting a new PA to replace Louise?
Man: Oh, we can leave that, I think. She isn't going till the end of April now.
Woman: That's good. I thought she was leaving sooner.

Even before Alan Greenspan's admission that America's red-hot economy is cooling, lots of working folks had al ready seen signs of the slowdown themselves. From car dealerships to Gap outlets, sales have been lagging for months as shoppers temper their spending. For retailers, who last year took in 24 percent of their revenue between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the cautious approach is coming at a crucial time. Already, experts say, holiday sales are off 7 percent from last year's pace. But don't sound any alarms just yet. Consumers seem only concerned, not panicked, and many say they re main optimistic about the economy's long-term prospects, even as they do some modest belt-tightening.
Consumers say they're not in despair because, despite the dreadful headlines, their own fortunes still feel pretty good. Home prices are holding steady in most regions. In Manhattan, "there's a new gold rush happening in the $4 million to $10 million range, predominantly fed by Wall Street bonuses", says broker Barbara Corcoran. In San Francisco, prices are still rising even as frenzied overbidding quiets. "Instead of 20 to 30 offers, now maybe you only get two or three", says John Deadly, a Bay Area real-estate broker. And most folks still feel pretty comfortable about their ability to find and keep a job.
Many folks see silver linings to this slowdown. Potential home buyers would cheer for lower interest rates. Employers wouldn't mind a little fewer bubbles in the job market. Many consumers seem to have been influenced by stock-market swings, which investors now view as a necessary ingredient to a sustained boom. Diners might see an upside, too. Getting a table at Manhattan's hot new Alain Ducasse restaurant need to be impossible. Not anymore. For that, Greenspan & Co. may still be worth toasting.

SECTION A CONVERSATIONS
Directions: In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文:M: I really appreciate you're feeling me in on yesterday's lecture.
W: No problem. I thought you might want to go over it together. And anyway, it helps me review. Hope you're feeling better now.
M: I am, thanks. So you said she talked about squid? Sounds a little strange.
W: Well, actually, it was about the evolution of sea life, a continuation from last week. The octopus and the squid descended from earlier creatures with shells. They survived by shattering their shells, somewhere between 200 and 500 million years ago.
M: That's a pretty long span of time.
W: I know. That's what she said though. To be precise, exactly when they emerged is uncertain and why Is still unexplained. M: Some squid are really huge. Can you imagine something that big if it still had a shell?
W: Actually, it's because they lost their shells that they could evolve to a bigger size.
M: Make sense. But some are really huge. I've read about fishermen that caught squid that weight over a ton. Did she talk about how that happens?
W: Not really, but she did mention some unusual cases. In 1933 in New Zealand, they caught a squid let's see here it was 22 yards long. Its eyes were 18 inches across. Can you imagine?
M: Reminds me about all those stories of sea monsters.
W: Doctor Simpson thinks there are probably even larger ones that haven't been found, because squid are intelligent and fast—so they can easily get away from humans. Maybe some of those monster stories are true.
What topic are the man and woman discussing?
A.Mating habits of squid and octopus.
B.The evolution of certain forms of sea life.
C.The study of marine shells.
D.Survival skills of sea creatures.
