Passage 4 When most people think of a shipwreck, t...

Passage 4 When most people think of a shipwreck, they imagine the remains of a huge wooden or metal boat crashed along the bottom of the ocean. Fish swim in and out of the mangled boat’s hull, and coral and seaweed cling to its sides. Meanwhile, divers with scuba gear and cameras paddle their way into the depths to explore inside the long-forgotten vessel. They might find anything from old pottery to rusty cannons to pirate gold, but one thing is certain: the deep cold water has swallowed up the ship and kept it secret for a very long time. Surprisingly, though, water is not always a necessary element in shipwreck explorations. Few people realize that many important shipwrecks can be found on land. Trading skiffs, warships, and pirate galleons alike have been found buried deep in riverbeds, hilltops, and cornfields throughout the world. The author most likely composed these two paragraphs in order to:

A、inform the reader about surprising places shipwrecks have been found.

B、describe what a person would find if he or she visited a shipwreck.

C、compare the similarities between a water-found shipwreck and a land-found shipwreck.

D、intensify the discovery of a shipwreck by surprising the reader with a new location for finding them.

听力原文: In many places, ice is as widely used as bread, and it would be surprising indeed if ice did not give birth to many special phrases.

The expression, "to break the ice", meant, to make your first move, to do something for the first time; it was not possible until the ice was broken. Later, the expression developed another meaning, covering a relationship between people. When you have not broken the ice with someone, you have not yet cleared the. way to his trust in you, to his friendship, You must get through to him, just as the small boats had to clear the river's ice jam.

When you tell someone that he "cuts no ice" with you, you are making certain things clear to him — that you are not moved or impressed or influenced by him in any way. You are putting it to him straight — that he is getting nowhere with you.

"Skating on thin ice" is something else again. This means that a man may be doing or saying some- thing risky. It might be offensive and get him into trouble. Thin ice is not much support; if he is not more careful, he may sink right through.

In sports or any other kind of contest, you will hear the phrase, "The game is on ice" or "It is iced up". This simply means that the game is really over, that one side is so far ahead that the other cannot catch up. There is no longer any doubt as who the winner will be.

What is the meaning of "Skating on thin ice"?

A.One may be doing something quite difficult.

B.One may be doing something quite risky.

C.One may be doing something quite annoying.

D.One may be doing something impossible.

听力原文: Zachary Taylor was elected as the 12th president in 1849. It's surprising because he was the first president that didn't have any political experience. The main reason he was chosen as a candidate was because he was a war hero. In the army, his men called him old, rough and ready, I guess, because of his rough address. He was kind of blunt and he didn't really look like a military hero. He liked to do things like wearing civilian clothes instead of a uniform. even in battle. And he was so short and plump that he had to be lifted up onto his horse. But he did win a lot of battles and he became more and more popular. So the Whig Party decided to nominate him for the presidency, even though no one knew anything about where he stood on the issues. I couldn't find much about his accomplishments because he was only in office about a year and a half before he died. But one thing, he pushed for the development of a transcontinental railroad because he thought it was important to form. a link with the west coast. There was a lot of wealth in California and Oregon from commerce and minerals and stuff. Also, he established an agricultural bureau in the Department of the Interior and promoted more government aid to agriculture. He died in office in 1850. So his vice-president took over.

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

32. Why was Zachary Taylor chosen by his party as a candidate for president?

33. What can we know about Zachary Taylor?

34. Why did Taylor have little political achievements?

35. When did Zachary Taylor die?

(33)

A.He was well-known on the West Coast.

B.He made many political achievements.

C.He supported financial aid to farmers.

D.He was a popular war hero.

Fourteen-year-old Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest. Ninety-two young people were invited to the contest and Hawley cane out first.

The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes l and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley says he" did pretty well at staying calm. I couldn' t be thinking about how many mistakes I'd make--it would distract me from playing," he says. "I don' t even remember trying to impress people while I played. It' s almost as if they weren' t there. I just wanted to make music."

Hawley is a winner. But he didn' t become a winner by concentrating on winning. He did it by concentrating on playing well.

"The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part," said the founder of the modem Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. "The important thing in life is not the triumph but the straggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

New research shows that Coubertin' s philosophy is exactly the path achievers take to win at life' s challenging games.

A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their competitors or future glory or money, says Dr. Charles Garfield, who has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, the arts, and professions. "They are interested in winning, but they're most interested in self-development, testing their limits."

One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they' ve had--and how much they' ve learned from each. "Not one of the 1,500 I studied defined losing as failing," Garfield says. "They kept calling their losses ' setbacks. '"

A healthy attitude toward setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree.

"The worst thing you can do if you' ve had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a prolonged depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific things you did right and give yourself credit for them." Garfield believes that most people don' t give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you've done on the way to a goal.

Hawley won the contest because ______.

A.he put all his mind to his performance

B.he cared much about the judges' feelings

C.he tried his best to avoid making mistakes

D.he paid close attention to the people around
