Researchers have found that REM(rapid eye movement)sleep is important to human beings. This type of sleep generally occurs four or five times during one night of sleep lasting five minutes to forty minutes for each occurrence. The deeper a persons sleep becomes, the longer the periods of rapid eye movement. There are physical changes in the body to show that a person has changed from NREM(non-rapid eye movement)to REM sleep. Breathing becomes faster, the heart rate increases, and, as the name implies, the eyes begin to move quickly. Accompanying these physical changes in the body there is a very important characteristic of REM sleep. It is during REM sleep that a person dreams.

According to the passage, how often does REM sleep occur in one night?

A.Once.

B.Twice.

C.Four or five times.

D.Forty times.

Luckily, the back tires of their car stayed on the road. Otherwise, the young couple would

have driven right into a pit twenty feet wide and thirty feet deep! The man and woman were coming home from a party. They were enjoying the landscape around Swansea, Wales. Suddenly, they found the front of their car leaning into a huge hole. The car barely hung onto the edge of the pit. It swayed back and forth like the arm of a balance. In their precarious position, the couple knew that each movement they made could be a matter of life and death. Slowly, slowly, they edged toward the backseat. Then each opened a back door. And on the count of three, they jumped out together. The accident was so scary that they ran a long way before they calmed down. But later they returned to see what had happened. They found that a big chunk of the road had sunk into the ground! And at the bottom of the pit lay their car—roof down and wheels up. Was this mystery of the sunken road ever solved? It turned out that an abandoned mine shaft lay under the road. It had collapsed and taken the pavement with it. Layers of tunnels intersect beneath the city of Swansea. The tunnels were built so many years ago that no one knows where they end or begin. The tunnels are shaky, like those that ants build in the sand. No one knows when the entire city might collapse.

This passage is primarily about______.

A.driving carefully

B.the city of Swansea, Wales

C.a road that caved in

D.tunnels that ants build

Every country has its heroes. They may be soldiers or sports people, doctors or film stars

. We admire them for their courage, their strength, their devotion to duty or their talent. Their example inspires us to live better, to work harder. Terry Fox was a young student who loved life and who loved sports. When he was just 18 years old a terrible tragedy occurred: his right leg had to be cut off because of cancer. Such an experience would have destroyed a weaker person—but Terry Fox was a fighter. He refused to give up. Instead, while he was recovering from the operation, an idea slowly formed in his mind. He decided he would run across Canada—in order to raise money for cancer research. Slowly and carefully, he began to train. Every step was extremely painful, but he insisted, increasing the distance covered day by day. Sixteen months later, in the spring of 1980, he was ready for the long journey across Canada—his Marathon of Hope. It was a time of inspiration and heartbreaking emotion. Through television, every home saw his distinctive style. of running—a kind of half-hop and half-run. Thousands of people lined the route to encourage him and to wish him well. They also gave money to fight cancer. Then, on September 1st, 1980, after 143 days and more than 5 , 000 kilometers completed, everything came tragically to an end. Terry had to stop. He lived on for another nine months and died on June 28th, 1981. He was almost 23.

Terry Fox was a______.

But out of doors it is very fresh, especially in the morning. But what shall we play? There are a number of games such as football, basketball, races. . . Any game with plenty of exercises is good.
