根据以下材料,回答题

Androids

Computers are now powerful enough to allow the age of humanoid robots to come. And it won"t be long before we will see realistic cyber companions, complete with skin, dexterity (灵敏),and intelligence. They will be programmed to tend to your every need.

Will we ever want to marry robots? Artificial intelligence researcher David Levy has published a book claiming human-robot relationships will become popular in the next few decades.

___________ (46)Will humans really be able to form. deep emotional attachments to machines? It will, in fact, be relatively easy to form. these strong attachments because the human mind loves to give human attributes to other creatures——even objects.

For example, researchers in San Diego recently put a small humanoid robot in with a toddler playgroup for several months. ___________ (47) The children ended up treating it as a fellow toddler. When it lay down because its batteries were flat, the kids even covered it with a blanket.

In a few decades, when humanoid robots with plastic skin look and feel very real, will people want to form. relationships with them? What if the bots could hold a conversation? And be programmed to be the perfect companions——soul mates, even? ___________ (48) And like those toddlers in the experiment, they will be very accepting of them.

The next question, then, is whether there is anything wrong with having an emotional relationship with a machine. Even today there are people who form. deep attachments to their pets and use them as substitutes for friends or even children. Few consider that unethical (不和伦理的,不道德的 ) . ___________ (49) For those who always seem to.end up marrying the wrong man or woman, a robotic Mr. or Ms. Right could be mighty tempting. As the father of artificial intelligence,Marvin Minsky, put it when asked about the ethics of lonely older people forming close relationships with robots: "If a robot had all the virtues of a person and was smarter and more understanding, why would the elderly bother talking to other bad-tempered old people?"

A robot could be programmed to be as dumb or smart, as independent or subservient(服从的),as an owner desired. And that"s the big disadvantage. Having the perfect robot partner will damage the ability to form. equally deep human-human relationships. People will always seem imperfect in comparison. When you"re behaving badly, a good friend will tell you. ___________ (50) People in relationships have to learn to adapt to each other: to enjoy their common interests and to deal with their differences. It makes us richer, stronger, and wiser. A robot companion will be perfect at the start. However, there will be nothing to move the relationship to grow to greater heights.

Immigration and Problems

Hundreds of thousands of people supporting immigration rights in the US filled streets all over America in early 2006. Many held signs and American flags and asked to be treated as citizens—not criminals. Many of these supported legislation from Senator John McCain that would open a path to citizenship to immigrants who were already in the country illegally. Proposed legislation from other politicians called for stricter measures- including rounding up undocumented immigrants and sending them back to their home countries.

Canadian officials say that immigration applications continue to rise. Some want to keep the doors open. They need the labor. About 400,000 immigrants were allowed into the country in 2005,according to the Canadian Government statistics. However, all this growth means that cities need to adapt. New comers don"t always make a smooth transition into jobs for which they are skilled. So industries are using mentoring ( 辅导 ) programs to help new immigrants find proper jobs.

With the large numbers of undocumented African immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands and showing no sign of abating (减少), the Spanish Government has decided to get tough. There will be no more mass amnesties (特赦) for illegals, and anyone coming to Spain without permission will be sent back, the government has announced. About 23,000 migrants (移民 ) landed on the islands in2006, and riots have erupted in some crowded reception centers. This has promoted local authorities to appeal to the United Nations for help.

France"s new immigration and integration law gives the government new powers to encourage high-skilled migration. It takes effect in 2007. The new law authorizes the government to identify particular professions where France has a talent shortage. Then the government will help these identified employers find immigrant workers with needed skills or qualifications. The selected foreign employees will be granted "skills and talents" visas, valid for three years. But some people show the concern that it"ll cause brain drain in developing countries.

Many immigrants in the US took to the streets in early 2006, demanding that __________ . 查看材料

A.John McCain be removed

B.they be sent back home

C.they be treated as citizens

D.their culture be protected

根据以下材料,回答题

Road Politeness

It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick peace of modern life, but manners on the roads are becoming horrible. You might tolerate the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.

Perhaps the situation calls for a "Be Kind to Other Drivers" campaign; otherwise, it may get completely out of hand.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense, too. It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behaviors. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance, so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such acknowledgements of politeness are all too rare today. Many drivers nowadays don"t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, improper politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child across a crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.

A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learn to filter correctly into traffic streams without causing the total blockages (堵塞) that give rise to bad temper. Unfortunately, modern motorists can"t even learn to drive, let alone be well-mannered on the road. Years ago the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

According to this passage, troubles on the road are primarily caused by __________ . 查看材料

A.the traffic jams

B.the quick peace of modern life

C.the cost of petrol

D.the behavior. of the driver

根据以下材料,回答题

The Romance of Arthur

Most cultures have some sort of hero who represents the best values of what its people believe in. The unusual thing about King Arthur is that legends of his heroism have persisted for several centuries and spread far beyond England, the place where they began.

The earliest stories of King Arthur represent him as a warrior who fought and defeated the invading Norsemen in the years around A. D.700. This much of the Arthurian tale is probably based on fact. Whether called Arthur or not, there is a body of evidence supporting the existence of such a warrior. It is the later embellishments (美化) of the tale whose authenticity (真实性) is questionable. According to these, Arthur was born in a castle in Tintagel on the stormy western coast of England and because he was the illegal son of King Uther Pendragon, he was spirited away(拐走) by the magician Merlin and his true identity kept from him. He became king after freeing the sword Excalibur from the stone into which it was thrust. He marred the beautiful Guinevere and assembled in his court all the noblest knights of the land, including Lancelot, with whom Guinevere would later be unfaithful to him. He was finally defeated in battle by his son Mordred.

This romantic tale greatly appealed to the English and the French in the Middle Ages, when the code of chivalry (骑士) -ideal qualities of knighthood-constituted an important part of many stories. Tales of the heroism of Galahad, Percival, Gawain, and many other of Arthur"s knights were spread as well.

In England today, there are many sites claiming a piece of the Arthurian an legend. There is a mined castle at Tintagel. Near Glastonbury are the remains of an ancient abbey where Arthur"s and Guinevere"s bodies were supposedly exhumed in the 12th century. Neither of these proves that the legend is true, but they do keep its mystique alive.

King Arthur‘s father was___________ . 查看材料

A.Lancelot

B.Avalon

C.Mordred

D.Uther Pendragon
