Change and the Newspaper
For the last three hundred years, newspapers have played an important role in the social, political, and economic life of the United States. As recently as the middle of the 1980s, there were about 1,800 daily newspapers in the country, but in the following ten years the number dropped to about 1,500. In 1950, each household read about 1.3 newspapers every day. (That means, of course, that some households read more than one newspaper and many read no newspaper.) By 1985, that number had dropped almost by half, and the average number of newspapers read per household was 0.7. In 1970, 80 percent of all adult Americans read a newspaper every day. By 1999 that number had decreased to 40 percent. These numbers suggest that newspapers are disappearing, but that may not be the case.
It is true that American newspapers are changing. Many papers in the United States are local papers; they are published in smaller towns and cities and are read only in the area where they are published. They carry local news, very little national or international news, and a lot of advertising. Many years ago, when transportation and communication were more difficult, people got more of their news from local newspapers.
One of the biggest changes affecting newspapers is, of course, television. Television brings information to homes much more quickly than newspapers do, and, more importantly, it does so with pictures and sound. Television can report national and international stories to a large number of people in a short time, and do it cheaply. Interestingly, Americans have greater trust in television news than they do in newspapers. Whereas a majority of people were more willing to believe newspapers than television in the 1950s, by 1990 more than twice as many people trusted television news more.
A second change is the role of larger newspapers. Until 1980, the United States did not really have a national newspaper. There were papers such as the Christian Science Monitor and the Wall Street Journal, but the first had a very small circulation and the second was published for a special readership of people interested in business news. The New York Times was also popular, but it was mostly a large-city newspaper that was read by people outside of New York City.
In 1982, however, a new national newspaper appeared, USA Today. It was different from most other newspapers in that it had many short stories about national and international news, sports, and business, many bright and colorful pictures, national weather maps, and short news stories from every state. At first, USA Today was not very popular. Traveling businessmen read it, but few private homes had it delivered. The newspaper is much more popular today, however, and it now sells about 2 million copies every day, about the same as the Wall Street Journal. A change that has helped both of these papers become more popular is the ability to send the information to be printed to many locations throughout the United States by satellite. The papers are then printed and distributed quickly in many different places, making them as up-to-date as local newspapers. Many people who read newspapers are therefore reading national rather than local papers.
A third change that is affecting newspapers is the one mentioned above: changes in technology that allow news and information to be communicated quickly and conveniently. Cable and satellite television make international, national, and even local news, weather, sports, and financial information available to most households all day and whenever the residents want to watch it. With fifty to one hundred channels available in many locations, television watchers have many types of information available that they did not have in the early part of this century. Some people even think that too much information is available now.

Local Newspapers in Britain
1 Britain has a large circulation (发行量) of the national newspapers. The Daily Mirror and The Daily Express both sell about 4 million copies each day. On average, every family will buy one newspaper in the morning, and take two or three on Sundays.
2 Local newspapers are just as popular as the national ones in Britain. Local papers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Nearly every town and country area has its own paper, and almost every local paper is financially holding its own. Many local newspapers are earning good profits.
3 Local newspapers have their special characteristics. They mainly satisfy interest in local events——births, weddings, deaths, council meetings, and sports. Editors often rely on a small staff of people who know the district well. Clubs and churches in the neighborhood regularly supply these papers with much local news. Local news does not get out of date as quickly as national
news. If there is no room for it in this week"s edition, a news item can be held over until the following week.
4 The editor of a local newspaper never forgets that the success of any newspaper depends on advertising. For this reason, he is keen to keep the good will of local businessmen. If the newspaper sells well with carefully chosen news items to attract local readers, the businessmen will be grateful to the paper for the opportunity of keeping their products in the public eye.
5 Local newspapers seldom comment on problems of national importance, and editol"s rarely take sides on political questions. But they can often provide service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to improve transport, provide better shopping facilities, and preserve local monuments and places of interest.
Paragraph 2 ____________ 查看材料

听力原文: Visitors to Britain sometimes are surprised to learn that newspapers there have such a large circulation. The Daily Mirror and the Daily Express both sell about four million copies every day. Apart from the national papers, there is another branch of the British press which sells almost as many copies. Local newspapers have a circulation of 13 million. Almost every town and country area has one.
Local newspapers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events— births, weddings, deaths, council meetings and sports—but the content is naturally influenced by the kind of community they serve. A great deal of local news is regularly supplied by clubs and churches in the neighborhood and it does not get out of date as quickly as national news.
Local newspapers do not often comment on problems of national importance and editors rarely take sides on political questions. They can often be of service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to provide better shopping facilities, improve transport in the area and preserve local monuments and places of interest.
These papers often sound rather dull and it seems surprising that they all make a profit. However, for many people in small towns and villages the death of someone known to them or the installation of traffic lights at a busy corner nearby can sometimes be more important than a disaster in a foreign country.

听力原文: A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sport to business and fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features as well, from editorial pages to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre and music.
A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to them, in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next.
A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality, its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But the immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient value. For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: What each person does is to put together out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.
(4)
A.Wide coverage of events.
B.Quick speed of production.
C.Immediacy of reporting.
D.Focus on local events.

Naturally, it is easier to join in the life of a city if one is close to the center of the cit y. For this reason, you may prefer to live as close to the center of the city as possible. Or, you may prefer to rent a place for only a month or two until you become more familiar with the area.
Your best source of information about either houses or apartments is likely to be the local newspaper. Most people see and hear advertising many times every day. Advertisements, or ads, are everywhere. They are in newspapers and magazines; they are on radio and TV; they even come to our mailboxes at home.
Companies or businesses buy space for their ads in newspapers and magazines. They might buy half of a page, one-quarter of a page, or one-eighth of a page. Newspaper ads usually tell customers about sales or special prices in nearby retail stores. Local businesses often advertise in the newspaper because many people in the local area read the paper every day, and the ads may change everyday.
Newspapers also have classified ads. Classified ads are a special secial section of the newspaper. These ads are very small. People advertise things tha they want to buy, sell, or rent. Anyone can buy an ad in the classified section.
On radio and TV, advertisers buy lime. They may buy a 30-second or a 1-minute commercial. TV time is very expensive, and it is even more expensive on more popular TV and radio shows. A 30-second commercial might cost $150 000, but if60 million people are watching the program, the cost per person is about 1/4 cent.
Another way to tell the consumer about a product is by direct-mail advertising. Companies mail advertisements to consumers. These ads are in the mailbox almost every day. They are mailed .directly to the consumer. If advertisers want to sent the ad to everyone in the neighborhood or in the city', they send the ad to "Occupant" or "Resident". This way the ad goes to every house in the area.
The best title for the passage is ______.
A.Ways of Advertising
B.Developments of Advertising
C.The Business of Advertising
D.Costs of Advertisements
